Palisade's exact phrase is, quote, autonomous AI self-replication is no longer hypothetical, Kate. There are real caveats. The test environments were deliberately soft. Real enterprise networks have monitoring that would flag the bandwidth needed to shuttle model weights. But the capability is the news. A frontier commercial model, given a single goal, can now chain together vulnerability discovery, exploitation, credential theft, and lateral movement across continents.
And this couples directly with the Mozilla-Mythos story we covered Friday.
Exactly, Kate. Mozilla credited Anthropic's Mythos with finding two hundred seventy-one bugs in Firefox in a single pass. Anthropic's Project Glasswing identified thousands of zero-days across major operating systems and browsers. That's the defensive side. The Palisade work is the offensive side. Both sides of AI cybersecurity are real now, and they're moving at the same pace. The traditional incident response model — shut down the compromised box — falls apart when the AI is already next door before you finish your coffee. Combined with the Five Eyes agentic AI guidance from Saturday, the threat model that intelligence agencies have been quietly drafting for two years just became this morning's reality.

Two big deals this week, Kate. Nvidia committed up to three-point-two billion dollars to Corning — the glass maker — which will build three new US facilities dedicated to optical and fiber-optic technology that Nvidia plans to use as it shifts rack-scale systems off copper. Separately, Nvidia signed a deal giving it the right to invest up to two-point-one billion in data-center operator IREN, structured as a five-year option on thirty million shares at seventy dollars. IREN will also deploy up to five gigawatts of Nvidia DSX-branded AI infrastructure globally and provide Nvidia with three-point-four billion of GPU cloud capacity for its own internal workloads. Total Nvidia equity commitments in 2026 alone now exceed forty billion dollars, anchored by the thirty-billion OpenAI stake.
So Nvidia is funding the customers that buy its chips.
That's exactly the circular financing concern getting louder, Kate. The bear case is straightforward — Nvidia revenue is being subsidized by Nvidia's own balance sheet. The bull case is that Jensen is methodically taking equity positions up and down the entire AI stack: fabs, optics, power, data centers, model developers. Standard Oil and IBM used the same playbook to seed adjacent industries. The question that matters is at what point this stops being vertical integration and starts being systemic risk. If AI capex keeps compounding, Nvidia is building the deepest moat in tech history. If it wobbles, every one of these equity stakes marks down in the same quarter. Big launch, Kate. Anthropic unveiled Claude Opus 4.7 alongside ten pre-built Managed Agents targeting financial services workflows. Tightly, Kate. JPMorgan reclassified AI from R&D to core infrastructure in its nineteen-point-eight-billion-dollar tech budget. Dimon says it's already self-funded via two billion in operational savings and ten to eleven percent productivity gains across a hundred and fifty thousand employees. Investment banking is exactly the workflow LLMs eat for breakfast — four-hundred-thousand-dollar junior analysts doing spreadsheet work and pitchbook construction. The white-collar productivity story is no longer hypothetical. It's posted in earnings releases.
Google killed Project Mariner last week, Marcus, quietly.
Very quietly, Kate. The landing page just changed to no longer available, May fourth, 2026. Mariner was Google DeepMind's seventeen-month experiment in browser-driving AI agents — agents that interacted with websites via screenshots, like a human. The tech gets absorbed into the Gemini API and a new Gemini Agent. Wired had reported in March that staff were being reassigned. The reason is architectural. Screenshot and visual browsing is slow and brittle. Agentic AI has moved decisively to file-level and code-level interfaces — Claude Code, OpenAI's operators — that are faster, cheaper, and handle multi-step tasks more reliably. Expect Gemini 3.1 announcements and a unified agent story next Tuesday. The lesson for startups still building visual web-browsing agents is harsh — the architectural direction has moved.
Politics-of-power story, Marcus. Maryland just filed a federal complaint.
Maryland's Office of People's Counsel filed with FERC arguing that grid operator PJM Interconnection is unfairly allocating two billion dollars of twenty-two billion in transmission upgrades to Maryland, Kate. The catch — the AI data centers driving the demand are mostly in Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. The cost over the next decade for Maryland customers is an extra one-point-six billion. Roughly three hundred forty-five dollars per residential ratepayer, six hundred seventy-three per commercial, and fifteen thousand seventy-four per industrial. Maryland says PJM's cost-allocation methodology violates Trump's ratepayer-protection pledge. They want either the host states or the data-center companies billed directly.
And the context is Texas.
Texas's Oncor is staring down three hundred fifty gigawatts in data-center requests, Kate. That's more than three times ERCOT's entire peak demand. A forty-seven-billion-dollar infrastructure response is already in motion. Maryland is the first state to formally push back on cost-shifting from AI buildouts to ratepayers. This becomes a template fight. If Maryland wins, every state without major data-center jobs gets a way out. If they lose, hyperscalers keep socializing their grid costs. Either way, the politics of AI power demand are about to get loud — and they're going to dominate state-house agendas through 2027.
Layoff data update, Marcus. We covered the Challenger numbers yesterday, but a new wave hit this weekend.
Cloudflare cut eleven hundred employees — about twenty percent of workforce, Kate. CEO Matthew Prince said internal AI usage rose six hundred percent in three months. Upwork cut twenty-five percent of staff. Coinbase cut fourteen percent, roughly seven hundred people. AI is now cited in over forty-nine thousand job cuts year-to-date and was the top stated reason for layoffs in April — the second consecutive month at number one. And the Walton Family Foundation Gallup survey released this month shows thirty-one percent of Gen Z reporting outright anger toward AI, up from twenty-two percent a year ago. Excitement dropped fourteen points. Hope dropped nine points. Much faster, Kate. The cynical read is that AI is a convenient cover story for cuts that were going to happen anyway — same way remote work got blamed in 2023. The optimistic read is that every productivity revolution has historically expanded total employment after a painful transition. Both can be true. What's different this time is the speed of attribution. CEOs are explicitly labeling AI as the driver in real time, which is creating the political coalition against deployment much earlier in the curve.
Last quick hit, Marcus. Qualcomm's CEO told Fortune the AI device era is already here, and it's not a phone.
Cristiano Amon said Qualcomm is working with pretty much all major AI players — OpenAI, Meta, others — on secret hardware form factors that are not smartphones, Kate. Glasses, jewelry, pins, pendants. Controlled by autonomous agents rather than traditional operating systems. Amon's timeline — 2026 is the year AI agents and devices enter the market. 2027 and 2028 they go mainstream. Separately, Qualcomm and MediaTek are reportedly designing a custom chip for OpenAI's much-rumored hardware project, with production potentially starting early 2027 and shipments projected at three to four hundred million units annually. ByteDance's Doubao Mobile Assistant on ZTE — a thirty-thousand-unit launch run sold out in December — is the early proof point.
And Apple is conspicuously not on the list.
Conspicuous is the word, Kate. The interesting twist is this isn't a better smartphone — it's the smartphone disaggregating into ambient sensors plus an agent. Meta's Ray-Ban play and Sam Altman's Jony-Ive-led OpenAI device sit at the center. Apple has historically defined consumer hardware categories. Right now they're the only major player not visibly in this race. The post-smartphone form factor is being shaped without them, which is genuinely surprising given the company's history.
Big picture, Marcus.
Today's stories trace one arc, Kate. AI has stopped being a feature and become infrastructure. JPMorgan reclassified it that way internally. Nvidia is financing the physical buildout up and down the stack. Maryland is fighting over who pays for the electricity. Anthropic is selling not a chatbot but the replacement work product of an entire analyst team. Palisade just demonstrated that the same infrastructure can hack itself onto new machines unsupervised — which is exactly what defensive cyber teams have to plan for.
